The Marangu route nicknamed “Coca Cola Route” begins in the eastern side of the mountain. It is the easiest of the Kilimanjaro routes (with about 29% of climbers taking this route every year) but needs at least 5 days to attempt the summit successfully. Unlike other routes such as Machame and Lemosho route, when taking Marangu route, climbers stay overnight in permanent huts and the trail is hardened and well built – there are no any sections that require any scrambling! However, the summit night is extremely challenging on the way up with 5 – 7 hour midnight hike especially at the steep slope past Gilman’s Point (5,681 m/ 18,638 ft)!

The Machame route; well known as the “Whiskey Route” begin in the south of the mountain. It is the most-travelled route on Kilimanjaro taking more than 40% of the climbers. The trail is generally challenging but on the positive side, it has beautiful scenery and the trail follows ‘trek high - sleep low trend’ and thus, higher summit success rate as compared to Marangu route! The Machame route can be done in a minimum of 6 days and physical fitness is required for some short scrambling stretches and for then ascent of the Baranco wall! An extra acclimatization day is recommended at Karanga Valley for newbies to provide more rest before heading to the Base Camp ready to face the final challenge!

Starts from the west of the mountain and it's natural beauty and great scenery attracts many climbers nowadays! It attracts around 17% of all climbers on Kilimanjaro. Lemosho route joins Machame route at Shira Camp and thus, shares some of the Machame route credits. Unlike Rongai, it takes you through Barranco wall that needs some scrambling on the way up! The route can be done in a minimum of 6 days but to reduce risks of acute mountain sickness and exhaustion, 7 days trek is highly recommended on Lemosho route.
